Digital photography has truly revolutionized the industry, and for the most part, in a very positive manner.
The good news about digital is that you shoot a lot of images and you end up with a lot of great shots. The bad news about digital is you shoot a lot of images and end up with a lot of work!
Post production work in the good old days of film was handled primarlily by the professional labs, and not always with good results. To a great extent, what you shot was what you got. Now the photographer sees the process through from the initial shoot through final output with much more creative control and essentially better results.
The downside is there is a lot more time involved for the photographer; from the initial editing of additional images to the painstaking prepping of selects. As a result, the cost of shooting digital has generally exceeded that of shooting film or transparencies, but for the most part in proportion to the overall quality of the final product.
Digital is definitely here to stay. Software and hardware technology is improving at tremendous rates, which makes it a challenge to keep up to date and expensive as well.
The bottom line though is it is a very exciting time to be a photographer. You truly are limited only by your imagination, and your budget!
